The Water Mill will be closed from April 2013 till mid October 2013 whilst repair works are carried out on the building. A programme of events will still run in our Barn.Heron Corn Mill on the banks of the river Bela in Beetham; South Cumbria, is one of the few working mills in the area, and has been a base for local industry powered by renewable energy for over 900 years. A fascinating visitor attraction, the fourteen-foot high waterwheel powers all the industrial heritage mill machinery whilst the newly installed 100kW hydropower Kaplan turbine generates electricity and takes the site's use of water-powered renewable energy into the 21st Century. We also run a diverse events programme in the barn which is also available for hire. Our staff are on hand to explain and demonstrate the mill's features, and provide you with a real insight into Heron Corn Mill's industrial past and creative future.


	Heron Corn Mill is a Grade II* listed building, comprising of the attached mill race (launder), attached grain kiln/dryer and internal machinery. It includes a rare survival of a Lowder frame that is associated with the machinery. The mill's associated structures, are of national significance, as a relatively intact, operational, 18th century corn mill that continues the use of the site as a water mill, a use that has been ongoing for over 900 years. The mill retains rare engineering features, such as the lowder frame, that is integral with the building, and milling has been documented on, or near the site, since at least the 13th century and it is likely that the mill has been constructed on the site of much earlier mills.

	The Barn at Heron Corn Mill is a multiuse facility available for private, public, corporate and commercial events with different hire rates tailored to suit different users and groups. The Barn offers banquet-style seating for up to 55 or talk/conference arrangements for up to 60 people, it provides a flexible space for a variety of users and purposes. For private function/parties and public events we can also offer a licensed bar facility featuring a selection of local beers and ales along with wines , spirits and soft drinks. Also on offer is an ongoing programme of workshops, activities and events organised by Heron Corn Mill staff. Please check the events page for more details.

	During 2009/2010 Heron Corn Mill installed a 100kW Kaplan propellertype hydropower turbine. This innovative and exciting addition will provide green energy for the entire complex, creating sustainability for the Trust and bringing new avenues of educational and artistic potential. In effect, we are diverting the course of the River Bela from the watermill's historic commercial industry to a contemporary creative industry.

Visitor Information 2013

We would like to inform that people wishing to visit the Mill at Heron Corn Mill that it will not be open for regular visits between January and September 2013 due to planned captial works on the mill building and site access. The Good news is that we have secured HLF funding for the development and Heron Corn Mill will offer a vastly improved visitor experience once re-opened later in the year. Click heading to read more

HISTORIC WATERMILL AWARDED HERITAGE LOTTERY GRANT

HISTORIC WATERMILL AWARDED HERITAGE LOTTERY GRANT Heron Corn Mill, situated on the west bank of the River Bela in Beetham, Cumbria, has been awarded a Heritage Lottery grant of GBP 939,100 to bring the Grade II* listed watermill back to life, improving access, creating training and learning opportunities, and developing and installing new interpretation and signage. Matched funding has also been awarded by John Paul Getty Jr Charitable Trust and Leader + RDPE.

HERON CORN MILL (BEETHAM) LTD WINS HERITAGE LOTTERY FUND SUPPORT
Heron Corn Mill in Beetham, near Milnthorpe, Cumbria has received initial support from the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) for the Waterpower Connection Point project, it was announced today.
