National Mills Weekend Community Open Day
National Mills Weekend Community Open Day Saturday 11 May as part of National Mills Weekend The first of three days set aside for people interested in the Heron Corn Mill and the on-going repair works. Come and visit, have a chance to talk to the craftspeople and find out about the materials being used and how they use them. Talk to the building surveyor, visit our pop up café and listen to informal talks about the history of the mill, hydro power, and the works going on. Learn about the difference between repair and restoration, and understand why we talk about using lime. Site tours available subject to the on-going works.

National Mills Weekend is the annual festival of our milling heritage and provides you with a fantastic opportunity to visit mills, many of which are not usually open to the public. For those who found inspiration to write or perform during the Thresh and Ply days recently, this is for you! Carran Waterfield - award winning theatre practitioner and Honorary Research Fellow (University of Manchester) facilitates a theatre and heritage workshop designed to examine the theatrical and performance possibilities of Heron Corn Mill. The workshop will begin to consider devising interactive and performance events for the site in response to participants ideas and passions.

Led by Alan Gardner (Alan Gardner Associates, project surveyor) and Adrian Walker (Contracts Director, Lambert and Walker and time served stonemason). There will be an opportunity to learn about the site, philosophy and approach to the work, and the skills and how they are applied by the craftspeople on the job. Attendance at the event will be certificated.

The second of three days set aside, during the works, for people interested in the Heron Corn Mill to come and visit during the time when the mill is being repaired. Have a chance to talk to the craftspeople and find out about the materials being used and how they use them. Talk to the building surveyor, visit our pop up café and listen to informal talks about the history of the mill, hydro power, the works going on. Learn about the difference between repair and restoration, understand why we talk about lime. Site tours available subject to the on-going works.
University Taster Day
An opportunity for those undertaking study in the construction professions to visit an established site on a Grade II* Listed historic mill. There will be opportunities to hear: from the overall project manager & CDM-C, James Woolgrove about budgeting and working with the Heritage Lottery Fund; from the Contract Administrator / Building Surveyor Alan Gardner about the creation of the tender and the running of the contract; from the principle contractor Adrian Walker about the work in the historic building sector and the important role of trained staff; and from the craftspeople doing the work about how they view this type of work.
Lime Technical Day
A technical day looking at lime mortar, repointing and masonry repair. The day will be led by Alan Gardner (Alan Gardner Associates, project surveyor) and Adrian Walker (Contracts Director, Lambert and Walker and time served stonemason). The day will be covering types of lime, lime slaking, aggregate selection, special additives, demonstration and opportunity for participation in mixing mortar and repointing. The day is aimed at those working in the trade as a craftsperson or a professional, including students. It will be taking place on a live Lambert and Walker site working on the Grade II* Heron Corn Mill. Attendance at the event will be certificated.
Construction Professionals Development Day
An opportunity for construction professionals to visit an established site on a Grade II* listed historic water mill. Roofing Technical Day
A technical day looking at traditional stone roofing with particular reference to the use of Burlington slate and the use of lead work on these roofs. The day will be led by Alan Gardner (Alan Gardner Associates, project surveyor), Dominic & Martin Clements of Bradford Roofing, and Gail Armstrong (the Bat Lady). The day will cover the different traditional roof construction and coverings including timber repair, selection of stone and lead and how to work the materials with hands on opportunities for lead burning and torching. We will also cover the different surveys and an awareness of bats during this session. The day is aimed at those working in the trade as a craftsperson or a professional, including students. It will be taking place on a live Lambert and Walker site working on the Grade II* Heron Corn Mill. Attendance at the event will be certificated.
Home Owners Day
Join Alan Gardner, conservation accredited chartered building surveyor and Heron Corn Mill project surveyor to better understand your old or historic property. Topics covered will include why old buildings are important, principles of conservation, how old buildings work, damp, timber decay, appropriate interventions, the material pallet, embarking on a project of your own. There will also be a site visit to the works that are being undertaken at Heron Corn Mill. Visitor Information 2013
We would like to inform that people wishing to visit the Mill at Heron Corn Mill that it will not be open for regular visits between January and September 2013 due to planned captial works on the mill building and site access. The Good news is that we have secured HLF funding for the development and Heron Corn Mill will offer a vastly improved visitor experience once re-opened later in the year. Click heading to read more
